I loved the apartment. It was the perfect place and I only moved out because I relocated to New York. At the time of the application, Salman was extremely accommodating and made it really easy during the process. I was even able to move 2 days before the day of the start of the lease. I only had to reach out to Sutro once concerning the heat and It got fixed right away.

Very unprofessional. I would not recommend anyone to work with them. We have submitted application and did not get a response, I called to check on status they told us. They did not process the application due to an ESA document they did not require on the application. So, we included and summited still no response. When we called they said there is another form we need to fill up.

The file that they sent us was unofficial and there was a large "SAMPLE" text watermarked on it. We responded the mail for the updated form, they did not respond. I have never been rejected from a background check and I have high paying job. It feels like they just delay the process and refused to run the background check on us, so we do not move in with our ESA pets.

Edited after speaking with the owner of the business. However some of my issues still stand. During our stay at the property on 611 E. 20th st. Oakland there we spent 3 to 5 months without being able to open our windows or get any sunlight into our unit because they had paid a company to paint the exterior and then the company that they had paid did the job poorly and had to repaint the entire building.

This was immensely frustrating as the building has beautiful views of most of the bay. I do realize this was primarily caused by the painting company they chose but I do think the selection reflects on the building owners. When we moved in our on-site property manager was a lovely old elderly couple who made an active effort to get to know everyone in the building and tried to build a strong community (something that, despite the best efforts to force out tenants locked in at a lower rate) existed when we left the building.

But was replaced by a passive aggressive younger couple who would routinely complain about relatively normal volume levels on our television speakers (no external system.) We ended up having to manually adjust the bass on the tv to negative 10. Even though we had noted large amounts of issues upon moving in they still saw fit to charge us half the cost of touch-up paint (which seemed a bit high at around $800 total for a single bedroom unit) and normal wear and tear line items that a Property management company should normally pay.

I will however give them credit for generally splitting the cost of these items with us. In addition to that, for the entirety of our stay there many things that we had reported as requiring attention were never fixed including a hole in the wall caused by dysfunctional door stopper, constantly growing black mold in the bathroom that covered the ceiling and walls (that we cleaned multiple times out-of-pocket cost to us.) Gunked up window blinds, a pane of glass on the center of the bay window that was not properly sealed and caused a draft and a garbage disposal that failed to work for almost a month straight for no good reason whatsoever, however to the credit of our younger property manager he came down multiple times in an attempt to fix it, however it wasn't until about a month of this back and forth that an actual plumber was contacted.

The building is beautiful and the community in it (at least when we left was amazing, which I think had a lot to do with the first onsite manager.) is strong in what amounts to a borderline neighborhood. It's this sort of building community that goes a long way to making a rental unity much more than just a bunch of yuppies paying maximum price for a shoebox in San Francisco and is part of the fabric that makes Oakland an Oasis in the bay area.

Additional point of the edit. While we obviously have different opinions of the state of the property after our year-ish stay, I ran into issues with what portion I got back from my month-and-a-half security deposit, when I called we spoke about this review and while they stuck to their guns about their belief that the price was fair, they were professional and civil in our obvious disagreement. That means something and they seemed willing to address my issue with the check.
